Just to Feel Something

The joy? of programming in 2026

Software development in Sept 2026 is indeed a weird space. Anything is possible, and often on the same day that you dreamed of it. It’s exciting but the dopamine reward doesn’t feel like it did in 2006. The problem solving is still there, but in a lot of ways the feeling of “programming is an art form” is gone – people will argue that it isn’t or shouldn’t be – but at the end of the day when people with capital want to build their idea and grow – users, revenue, etc. – the quickest to market often overpowers everything else. I may need to re-read Pragmatic Programmer just to feel something. 😅

My feelings on AI, its adoption and use outside of programming is wholeheartedly negative – it has no place in creative works. Art, literature and music we as humans should create and experience. But for plumbing some AWS, writing a bash script, monitoring deployments – an agent with appropriate context & tools is by far the best way to get the job done right now.
